Wormhole
A cross-chain messaging protocol in which a Guardian network signs attestations that relayers deliver to destination chains.
THE OVERVIEW
What Wormhole does
Wormhole is a generic message-passing protocol for communication between blockchains. Applications use it to move tokens, data and instructions across networks without being confined to one ecosystem. Its products include Native Token Transfers, Connect for cross-chain exchange and deposits, Messaging for arbitrary data, and Settlement. [1]
A message begins when an emitter contract calls the publish method on the Wormhole Core Contract of the source chain. Guardians, a network of validators running their own peer-to-peer network, observe and validate these messages and produce Verifiable Action Approvals, signed attestations with a 13-of-19 multisignature. Relayers, including the permissionless Executor framework, carry a VAA to the target chain where it is verified and executed; a Spy daemon subscribes to Guardian messages to help distribute them. [2]
IN PRACTICE
What people use it for
Transfer tokens across chains
Native Token Transfers moves assets between supported networks. [1]
Send arbitrary messages
Applications on different chains can exchange data through Core Contracts and VAAs. [2]
Deliver messages permissionlessly
The Executor framework lets any provider quote and deliver messages. [2]
