LayerZero
An omnichain messaging protocol of immutable endpoints, with a configurable Security Stack of decentralized verifier networks.
THE OVERVIEW
What LayerZero does
LayerZero deploys an immutable, permissionless Endpoint contract on each supported blockchain. A contract on the source chain calls the Endpoint’s send function, a packet is emitted, the destination chain verifies it, and an authorized caller such as the Executor invokes lzReceive to execute it. The sender contract, source endpoint ID, destination endpoint ID and receiver contract together define a unique messaging channel. [1]
Verification is handled by a configurable Security Stack of Decentralized Verifier Networks. Each application sets an X-of-Y-of-N threshold per source and destination, distinguishing required DVNs, all of which must verify a payload hash, from optional DVNs that add further checks. Once the threshold is met, the message nonce can be committed to the destination Endpoint for execution, and applications can choose providers or run their own verifiers. [2]
IN PRACTICE
What people use it for
Send omnichain messages
Call the Endpoint from a source contract and receive on the destination through lzReceive. [1]
Choose a security configuration
Select required and optional DVNs and thresholds for each channel. [2]
Manage message libraries
Applications may pick specific messaging libraries for different operations. [3]
