27 Stock Markets Worldwide Are in Bear Territory. Why Is America Missing?
A viral list named 43 bear markets. BeInCrypto confirmed 27. See why the Nasdaq and S&P 500 aren't among them.
Brief
BeInCrypto checked a viral X list claiming 42 countries' stock indexes are in bear markets, meaning drops of 20% or more from a peak. Its check found 27 meet that test, while the United States does not. Seven of the 27 peaked this year, and eleven remain below records set from 1999 to 2008.
Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 6% Friday to 57,434.77, now 21.1% under its June 22 record, and South Korea's KOSPI, 46.1% off its June high, dropped below 5,000 and triggered a 20-minute trading halt. On Thursday the Nasdaq Composite lost 5.52%, and a major chip index shed over 12%, as investors worried Democrats' midterm wins could slow AI data center construction. The Nasdaq, at 24,315, sits roughly 12% below its October 6 peak, a correction rather than a bear market.
Why it matters: The check shows the broader count was overstated and that U.S. indexes remain short of bear territory even as chip stocks slid.
