Sui
A layer-one blockchain where every piece of state is an object, secured by delegated proof of stake and paid for in SUI.
THE OVERVIEW
What Sui does
Sui is a layer-one blockchain built on a delegated proof-of-stake consensus model. Its defining design choice is that everything on the chain is an object with metadata, a type of ownership and a referencing scheme. Time is divided into epochs, during which the validator set remains unchanged, and the native SUI token is the currency of the network and pays its gas fees. [1]
The tokenomics documentation gives SUI four roles: staking to take part in proof of stake, paying gas, serving as a liquid asset for applications and participating in onchain governance. Transactions pay both computation and storage fees against a reference gas price set at the start of each epoch. Storage fees flow into a storage fund that compensates validators for holding historical data, and deleting past data returns a partial rebate. [2]
IN PRACTICE
What people use it for
Build with objects
Applications model state as owned or shared objects rather than account balances alone. [1]
Delegate stake
SUI holders delegate to validators through a self-custodial stake object and receive a proportional share of rewards. [2]
Pay for computation and storage
Each transaction pays gas for execution and a separate fee for the data it adds to the chain. [2]
UNDERSTAND THE TECHNOLOGY
Key concepts
Objects
The basic unit of Sui state, each with ownership rules and a reference scheme. [1]
Epochs
Fixed periods during which the validator set and the reference gas price stay constant. [1]
Storage fund
Storage fees collected from transactions are pooled and paid out to validators as compensation for storing data. [2]
