Ethereum

An open blockchain for applications, digital assets and programmable transactions.

THE OVERVIEW

What Ethereum does

Ethereum is a shared execution network: participants agree on the state of the Ethereum Virtual Machine, which runs programs called smart contracts. A transaction can move ETH, publish a program or call an existing application. This makes the network a foundation for financial tools, digital marketplaces and other applications. [1]

The ecosystem also includes layer-two networks that execute activity beyond the main chain. Rollups publish data to Ethereum; individual networks differ in design and maturity. Understanding which network an application uses is part of understanding how it settles transactions. [2]

IN PRACTICE

What people use it for

01

Use applications

Interact with deployed smart contracts for marketplaces, games and financial services. [1]

02

Build on shared state

Publish reusable programs that other accounts and applications can call. [1]

03

Explore scaling networks

Compare Ethereum-backed networks for application access, cost and settlement design. [2]

UNDERSTAND THE TECHNOLOGY

Key concepts

ETH and gas

ETH pays for computation and provides the collateral used by proof-of-stake validators. [1]

Smart contracts

Programs stored on the network execute when a transaction calls their functions. [1]

Layer two

Rollups move execution beyond the main chain while publishing their data to Ethereum. [2]
