Dextape brief
Brazilian crypto exchange Mercado Bitcoin has halted withdrawals and deposits after an estimated $46 million in digital assets was taken by hackers. The company said it had contained the security incident and that customers were unharmed and no data was exposed. It called the pause precautionary and is investigating with competent authorities. Akrham analyst Emmett Gallic claims the losses are above $46 million and still climbing, as the attacker moves old deposit addresses and sells memecoins and altcoins. The exchange had already published wallet addresses to help trace the funds. The US Secret Service has joined the probe, which is believed to be the work of the North Korea-linked group Trader Traitor, and the FBI has asked node operators such as THORChain to block related transactions.
Why it matters: The incident shows how an exchange breach can keep producing losses while investigators, exchanges and node operators work to trace and block stolen funds.
