$2 Billion Moves in the First 3 Hours After Binance Reopens Withdrawals
Binance withdrawals reopened and $2 billion moved within hours. Was it customers, and will Bitcoin rally?
Dextape brief
Blockchain tracker Whale Alert reported that roughly $2 billion in Bitcoin, Ether and stablecoins pegged to the dollar moved out of Binance about three hours after the platform restarted withdrawals on Sunday. The breakdown included 10,000 BTC valued near $779 million, close to $1 billion in Tether, $200 million in USDC and 30,000 ether equal to $68 million. Binance stated that it now processes every withdrawal from freshly created wallets added to its public list of customer-asset holdings. It has not matched each transfer to those addresses, but claims about 95% of the taken funds have been substituted. Only a first stage covering 15 networks is open, and co-founder Yi He noted that further wallets remain subject to security audits.
Why it matters: It shows how a major exchange is working to restore customer withdrawals after a large hack, which bears on users still locked out.
