A Cinema Chain Is Trying Something Strange to Bring Back the First-Viewing Feeling
Dutch chain Pathé will hypnotize 30 fans so they forget a favorite film, as Netflix now earns over twice the US and Canada box office.
Dextape brief
Dutch cinema chain Pathé is planning a test that uses hypnosis to help 30 film fans forget a favorite movie so they can watch it again with fresh eyes. The event, called Pathé REWIND, is scheduled for November 9 at Pathé Buitenhof in The Hague. Participants can choose among The Matrix, Se7en, La La Land and Interstellar. Hypnotherapist Victor Kraemer, a specialist with over 30 years in the field, will guide each fan through an online session, then hypnotize the group again right before the screening. Pathé has not explained how it will confirm whether anyone actually forgot the plot. The move comes as Netflix's 2025 North American revenue reached $19.96 billion, while box office receipts in the region fell to $8.66 billion.
Why it matters: It shows cinemas trying novel events to lure audiences as streaming revenue outpaces the box office, a pressure facing operators such as AMC, which accepts Bitcoin.
