Who’s Buying Gold in 2026? The World Gold Council’s New Data Has an Answer
The World Gold Council (WGC) now expects gold investment demand to grow by about 200 tonnes in 2026. That is half the 400 tonnes it had forecast earlier. In the same report, it raised its outlook for central bank buying.
Dextape brief
The World Gold Council has cut its 2026 estimate for gold investment demand growth to about 200 tonnes, half its earlier figure. Gold was priced at $3,937.98 on Wednesday, down 4.9 percent over the past month. Bar and coin purchasers slowed in the third quarter, with global demand falling 19 percent annually to 268 tonnes, a four-year low, and US and Indian buying dropping sharply. Central banks bought 321 tonnes in the quarter, up 42 percent from a year earlier, and the council estimates about 63 percent of that went unreported. China's bar and coin buying set a high of 393 tonnes over nine months, while exchange-traded funds drew a record $31 billion in Q3.
Why it matters: It shows which buyer groups are currently steering gold demand, a shift relevant to readers following gold alongside crypto markets.
