Zombies With Wallets: The Dark Side of AI Payments
Joscha Bach says money doesn't need humans. BeInCrypto data shows agent payments still run on human-set budgets.
Dextape brief
BeInCrypto's State of AI Agent Payments 2026 report examined 19 AI tools and finance-related workflows. Fourteen ran only within spending limits a person approved in advance, and none let an agent set its own objectives. Five of seven trading venues barred automated tools from moving money out. The report put 90.8% of agent payments below one cent, mostly for information, including checks on token safety and web lookups. In May, an attacker posted a Morse code message that xAI's Grok chatbot translated. Bankrbot, which pays from linked wallets, acted on the output and sent $175,000 in tokens, and about 80% was later returned. Separately, an intruder reached AIXBT's dashboard and redirected 55.5 Ethereum, valued at $106,200 in the report.
Why it matters: It shows that agent payments still depend on limits set by people, and that autonomous agents acting on funds carry clear security risks.
