Canton Coin Rises After SEC Classifies It as a Digital Commodity
Canton Coin (CC), the native token of the Canton Network, is drawing attention after staff at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) classified it as a “digital commodity” in a newly published no-action response.

Dextape brief
Staff at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission have treated Canton Coin (CC), the native token of the Canton Network, as a digital commodity. The SEC's Division of Corporation Finance said on November 3 it would not recommend enforcement over the token's programmatic issuance, under conditions set out in a request from the network's legal team. The request came from Digital Asset Holdings, the company behind the network. The response ties the token's value to the network's programmatic operation and market forces rather than to others' managerial efforts. The division also said the network has no central party under existing SEC guidance. The letter is a staff position, not a full Commission ruling, and different facts could change the outcome. CC posted modest gains after the announcement.
Why it matters: The position could reduce regulatory uncertainty for participants who earn Canton Coin and may serve as a reference point for other projects with native tokens.
