ASML’s CEO is putting his paycheck on the line for employee morale. It could help retain talent that’s nearly impossible to replace
After a year of layoffs and a drop in morale, Christophe Fouquet is betting that giving employees a say in what leaders earn will help ASML keep specialists who are costly to replace.

Dextape brief
ASML chief executive Christophe Fouquet has informed staff, in a memo first covered by Business Insider, that the chip-equipment maker will add a Workplace Experience Index to its long-term incentive plan for senior leaders, himself included. The step comes after the company's yearly employee survey showed engagement dropping to 73.5% from 78% a year earlier. Roughly 38,000 of about 44,000 workers took part. The index draws on six survey questions covering trust in senior leadership, willingness to speak up, role clarity, team effectiveness and whether managers show care. The memo does not say how much weight it will carry or when it first applies. The company had announced about 1,700 job cuts in January, mostly in management roles.
Why it matters: The move ties top executive pay to staff sentiment at a chipmaker that supplies the AI industry, showing how pay debates are reaching tech firms.
